Rafael Nadal tough on modern tennis
Rafael Nadal doesn’t like modern tennis
Rafael Nadal spoke to the media ahead of the exhibition match he will play Wednesday against Casper Ruud, a finalist at the ATP Finals in Turin, Buenos Aires.
“I am very happy to be here in Argentina after several years without having had the opportunity and with the illusion of being able to share these days with the Argentine public, which is very knowledgeable about the sport and very passionate. Whenever I have had the opportunity to be here they have always treated me in the best way,” said the Spanish champion.
He then expressed his disappointment with modern tennis, confessing that during his early years on the circuit “we played differently”: “Before, you prepared points by waiting for the right ball to attack, you didn’t attack every ball, you waited for the right ball. Today there are no transition balls or point preparation balls. Every ball hit has the goal of winning the point. I did well, I should not change anything, but emotionally I like another kind of sport, which allows you more options and to implement a tactic.”
“I would like to see tennis that offers more opportunities, more different styles of play. Today, because of the way the game is played, the structure of the courts, the balls, most people play a very similar style, because the speed of play and the conditions offer very little room to implement a different tactic. On clay courts there is a little more time, it gives you a chance to think,” Nadal concluded.
