Matteo Berrettini, Carlos Alcaraz tips his hat: “Tough, I knew it.”
Great satisfaction and lofty ambitions, but also honor of arms for the defeated.
Carlos Alcaraz praises Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon after beating him in the round of 16 on London’s grass. The Spaniard, No. 1 in the ATP rankings, struggled against the Roman, surrendering the first set to him, then winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. He still wanted to emphasize the Italian’s value as soon as the match ended.
“I knew it was going to be really tough,” Alcaraz said, “Matteo is a great player, he played a final here and his latest performances are of the highest level. It’s not easy to bounce back after losing the first set, I tried to go for more chances and stay focused. I had to avoid losing my mind.”
Now, however, Alcaraz is aiming to go all the way in London: “I’m really happy that I was able to recover and played a great match. I will play the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time, but I’m aiming for something even more important here. That’s for sure. Last year here I lost in the round of 16, this year I was aiming for the quarters. Now that I have made it I want more, my goal is to play the final. I hope to reach this dream, for now I am really very satisfied.”
