Wimbledon still bitter for Jabeur: Vondrousova new queen
Vondrousova new queen at Wimbledon
No dice for Ons Jabeur: the Tunisian tennis player, a year later, falls again in the final at Wimbledon. This time defeating her is Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova, who with a double 6-4, in one hour and twenty minutes of play, becomes the new queen of Wimbledon, winning the first Slam of her career.
And yes, Jabeur, the number 6 seed, had gotten off to a better start than her opponent: twice ahead by a break, the Tunisian let herself be caught by Vondrousova, who then overtook her, ending the first partial with the score of 6-4 in her favor. Quite similar was the trend in the second set with Jabeur again ahead in the early stages and then recovered by the Czech, who called to serve for the match on 5-4, did not tremble, sealing the success with a winning backhand volley.
For Jabeur, this is the third consecutive defeat in a Grand Slam final, while Vondrousova, world number 42, in her second Slam final, after Roland Garros in 2019, can celebrate her first career Major title.
Novak Djokovic is the active tennis player with the most number of Wimbledon men’s singles tournaments won: seven, one less than Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who recently retired after a career full of accomplishments. The Serbian ace triumphed on London’s grass in the 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 editions: in last year’s final he got the better of Nick Kyrgios, who forfeited and did not participate in the tournament in 2023, in four sets.
